RE: Propane vs. All electric

I've had propane before and won't again. And we dry camp some.

RE: LED Tail Light Conversions

Oh, we don't have that much trouble with incandescent bulbs burning out. But it only takes once. And pay attention again to the time difference and how it affects people behind you stopping. That's what's really important.

RE: LED Tail Light Conversions

The LED lights come on about 1/2 second faster. That's 44 feet at 60mph. Which can make the difference between someone hitting you at about 25mph or stopping before they touch you. That's a little more difference in money than the cost of 35 bulbs. Plus the LEDS don't EVER burn out or break and leave you with no light. These things might no matter that much to you on a MH, but they sure matter on a motorcycle. Or a small car.

Or you can use a HD flasher which doesn't care about load.

RE: We think they are Making a Mistake!!

Bad, bad, bad move for at least two major reasons. The first is to never buy MH before inspecting it thoroughly. The second is that given the state of the economy I have little doubt that MH prices will be lower 6 months from now.

RE: Tire Road Force Measurement - with lots of rambling

RF is a radial only measurement. One of the several reasons I prefer Michelin is that their tires are consistently closer to zero RF variation than any other brand as well as being straighter (lateral runout) and rounder (less diameter variation). In 35 years of mostly Michelin use on cars (over 2.5 million miles) I've had 1 broken belt. I've had broken belts on virtually every Goodyear or Firestone (which have come on new cars as OEM before I replaced them with Michelin).
Your experience may vary, but that's been mine. And I HATE vibrations or shake from tires.

RE: MH, Any idea of year and make?

Supra, where do you see a leaf spring? In the second picture you can see a lower A frame on the left side. And the narrow tread means that it is a P-30.

RE: Unexpected Weight Imbalance -- Problem?

You do want to pack heavy stuff further forward, keep tires inflated to actual aod weight as noted above, and you may want to consider adding air bags to the rear axle to carry some of the weight. The most likely real problems would come from wheel bearings or wheels themselves.
This is why I weigh a coach that I'm considering buying before paying. Salesmen/dealers seem to consider me a nutcase for doing so, but I really don't car what they think. They aren't the ones driving and paying for the thing.

RE: Fix Handling:

If the steering wheel feels like it has a quarter turn of play, it may actually have that much. In which case you need to be looking at the gearbox and steering linkage. Be aware that lateral play in the leaf springs can cause the same feel and is cured by panhard arms (track bars).

RE: Oils and additives

Mobil 1, Delvac 1 or Rotella Synthetic oil and Purolator Pure 1 or Baldwin filters work just fine. Cummins and CAT branded filters and oil are also good products. That's it. Don't mess up the oil chemistry by adding other stuff that may or may not be compatible.

RE: transmissions

W chassis had Allison, P had 4L80. Just one more reason to avoid the P chassis.

RE: transmissions

One other significant difference. Reverse in the Chevy four speed is not as low a ratio as first. You can find hills on which you can't back up with the four speed.
Don't even ask me how I know this.

RE: For v10, chev 8.1 454

I you're looking at a W chassis go with the Chevy for the 5 speed Allison. If a P chassis go for a Ford for the solid front axle. Both are somewhat comparable engines, the transmissions and chassis are a more significant difference in that model year. And if you go for a Ford make sure it's the later V10 (2000 or later chassis I believe, do NOT go by model year of the coach, check the chassis VIN).

RE: towing w 1996 allegro bus 35 w 300cat

If it's a 3060 Alllison it's going to be marginal at 375 as the rated limit is about 330. More cooling and decent driving should keep it alive with no trouble, but you will want a temp gauge on it.

RE: Who's going to survive...

Buy stock? This may be the best opportunity for decades. Or maybe not. I put all of the spare cash from oil shorts into basic commodities two weeks ago. That stuff has gone down so far, but I'm not concerned. It will come back. IMO. Your opinion may vary.
Tiffin is another company that can survive if they choose as they are well capitalized. It's always possible that they could decide go go into some other business. But I doubt that will happen.

RE: Who's going to survive...

Dropping fuel prices will help, but not much. The real obstacle is home equity with the resulting stock drop and loan tightening. Most people can't borrow for an RV purchase as a result. It'll take 3-5 years for that situation to improve significantly IF politicians in D.C. don't really mess it up in the meantime with "solutions" which aggravate the problem.
If Winnebago is hunkered down they have the correct stance for survival.

RE: U Joints - Big Issue?

It's quite possible that you might need U joints at 70K. But driveshafts do NOT have to be rebalanced after replacing joints. It is necessary to mark the joints and reassemble them in the same positions. Carrier bearings and their rubber mounts may also need replacement.

RE: Can a fresh water tank be repaired?

MH tanks are almost always polyethylene. They can be hot welded, but epoxy (and all other adhesives) will NOT stick to polyethylene, which is basically a wax. If the tank is really old and has cracked from age then welding really isn't an option. If it's in good shape and still flexible then it can be repaired.
